A Day at Sea: Lessons from a Wildlife Boat Tour - July 26, 2024

Venturing out on a wildlife boat tour with hopes high and cameras ready, I embarked on a five-hour sea expedition that proved to be an experience full of challenges and learning opportunities. The journey, while sparse in wildlife sightings, was rich in stories and lessons that deepened my appreciation for the ocean's apex predators and the art of wildlife photography.

Our adventure began with the thrill of spotting three majestic orcas, followed by a few graceful humpbacks. Despite the excitement, the opportunity for epic shots was elusive. The unpredictable nature of wildlife and the rolling sea made capturing these magnificent creatures a true challenge. Blurry photos became the norm, teaching me the hard truths about photographing from a moving boat.

Listening to stories from our knowledgeable guide about the orcas, I learned why they are considered apex predators of the sea. These creatures, with their complex social structures and hunting strategies, command respect and awe. Understanding their role in the marine ecosystem made me appreciate them even more, despite the lack of perfect photo opportunities.

A highlight of the tour was passing by the iconic Race Rocks Lighthouse. This historic lighthouse, with its distinctive black and white stripes, stands out strikingly against the blue sea. It has a fascinating history and serves as a vital navigational aid in these waters. The lighthouse also has a guardian responsible for its upkeep and for counting the various marine animals that inhabit the surrounding area. The structure itself, however, is often spelled like bird poop due to the numerous cormorants and seagulls that nest on it, adding a touch of rugged authenticity to its appearance.

The return journey brought sightings of sea lions and seals basking on rocky shores, along with cormorants and seagulls soaring overhead. While these encounters were brief, they added to the overall experience of the tour. However, the four hours spent battling seasickness made this outing one of my more physically demanding adventures.

As we navigated through the misty waters, a spotted a solitary black oystercatcher perched on a distant rocky outcrop. Its striking black plumage and bright orange beak made it stand out against the gray backdrop. Black oystercatchers are known for their distinctive calls and are often found along rocky shorelines where they feed primarily on mollusks, particularly mussels and limpets. They use their strong, chisel-like beaks to pry open the shells of their prey. Although the distance and the rocking boat made it difficult to capture a clear photo, the sighting added a delightful and unexpected highlight to our tour. This elusive bird's presence reminded us of the hidden treasures that nature offers, even in challenging conditions.

As I headed back to my car, I spotted a Great Blue Heron perched gracefully on a boat pier, all tucked into itself with feathers fluffed out, basking in the warm sun. It stood still, looking around with a calm, observant demeanor, embodying elegance and patience. This majestic presence, with its long neck curved in a regal pose, was a fitting end to an adventurous day at sea. The heron's tranquil stance reminded me of the beauty and serenity that nature offers, even in the most unexpected places.

Through this rocky voyage, I discovered my preference for land-based wildlife photography. The stability of solid ground allows for greater control and precision, elements I sorely missed while swaying on the open sea. Despite the challenges, the tour was a great time for bonding with my aunt and seeing the world from a new perspective.

The lessons from this boat tour were invaluable. Photographing wildlife in their natural habitat, whether on land or sea, requires patience, adaptability, and a deep respect for the animals. This experience reminded me that the journey, with all its bumps and blurs, is as important as the perfect shot. As I continue my Urban Wildlife Photography Challenge, I take with me the memories and lessons learned from this day at sea, appreciating the majestic creatures of the ocean and the art of capturing nature in all its forms.
