I Went Out for ‘Just One Bird’… Nature Had Other Plans” - April 17, 2026

After a week of rain, darkness, and cold that felt never-ending, the sun finally decided to show up.

Still cold but honestly? At that point, I wasn’t going to complain. I grabbed Finn, and we headed out to a local beach trail. Nothing fancy. Just a quick reset.

At first… it was underwhelming.

The only thing I spotted was a lone female Bufflehead drifting quietly on the water. Cute, yes. But after a week indoors, I was hoping for a bit more action.

Did you know?

Buffleheads are one of the smallest diving ducks in North America—and they got their name because their head shape can look a little “buffalo-like.” Small body, big personality.

Still, I kept going.

Because nature has a way of saying, “Just wait…”

On the way back, everything changed.

A Bald Eagle flew in and landed high atop a pine tree like he owned the place. Completely still. Completely aware. Watching over everything.

Did you know?

Bald eagles can see about 4–5 times farther than humans. So while I was admiring him… he had already clocked me, Finn, the sparrows, and probably my entire life story.

Speaking of sparrows…

A few White-crowned Sparrow popped in next, landing on a nearby fence like they were ready for a full photo session. Calm. Cooperative. Absolute professionals.

That’s when I noticed the bright yellow of the Scotch Broom beside them.

A bold splash of color. A little hint that summer is creeping in, even if the air hasn’t quite caught up yet.

Next stop: the farm flats.

And WOW.

Dozens of Barn Swallow and Tree Swallow tearing through the sky like tiny, feathered fighter jets.

I tried. I really did. But unless you have superhuman reflexes (or luck), photographing swallows in flight is basically a humbling experience.

I managed one juvenile perched on a power line. The rest? Let’s just say I came home with some very artistic photos of… air.

Still worth it. Because sometimes the magic isn’t in the shot, it’s in the moment.

So I moved on. Different beach. Different energy. And suddenly… wildlife everywhere.

A lagoon filled with elegant Great Blue Heron, standing like statues in the shallows.

Did you know?

Great Blue Herons can strike their prey in about 0.2 seconds. Blink and you miss it. They look slow and graceful, but they’re actually lightning-fast hunters.

Out on a sandbar, a group of Black Oystercatcher as seagulls snoozing.

On a rock in the middle of the lagoon cormorants and a heron sharing space like an unlikely dinner party.

And then, out on the ocean…

A group of Common Merganser diving for their dinner.

Did you know?

Mergansers are basically the “fish specialists” of the duck world, they have serrated bills that act like tiny teeth to grip slippery fish. Yes… ducks with teeth.

The light softened. The sun dipped. And just when I thought the day had given me everything it had…

One last stop. The Starbucks drive-through. Because of course.

And there he was.

A tiny Anna's Hummingbird perched at the very top of a spruce tree, his usual spot. Watching. Waiting. Completely unbothered by the line of cars below.

The unofficial guardian of the drive-through.

Did you know?

Anna’s hummingbirds don’t migrate like most hummingbirds—they stick around all year. Even in colder weather. Tiny, stubborn, and absolutely unstoppable.

And honestly?

That felt like the perfect ending. We didn’t go far. We didn’t spend all day. But we didn’t need to.

Sometimes all it takes is a little bit of light, a handful of wild moments, and a reminder that nature is always there, just waiting for you to step back into it.

To reset the soul. And clear the mind.

You had a wonderful turn of phrase---magic in the moment. That's all that matters.

That's often the way it happens. Valuable just the same.
