Urban Wildlife Adventures: A Day of Unexpected Encounters - Aug 3, 2024

At 6:30 am, with the first light of dawn peeking through the horizon, Baylee and I set off on another adventure. The early morning air was crisp, and the world was just waking up, promising the thrill of unexpected encounters. Armed with my trusty 600mm lens, I was ready to capture whatever nature had in store for me.

Our first surprise was a group of sparrows, flitting about with their usual energy. I snapped a few shots, marveling at how their tiny bodies contrasted against the vast morning sky. Not long after, a ladybug made a brief appearance, posing perfectly for a close-up. It’s always the little things that remind me of the intricate beauty of nature.

Then, the highlight of the morning: a red-tailed hawk perched high atop a towering Douglas fir tree, calling out as if announcing the start of a new day. The sun’s rays, though relentless even in the early hours, made capturing this majestic bird a challenge. Yet, the struggle was worth it.

As I roamed through the morning light, a dragonfly caught my eye, darting gracefully in the air. On a whim, I asked it, "Can I take your picture?" To my amazement, it seemed to hover momentarily, as if considering my request. Then, almost as if granting me permission, it paused in mid-flight. Despite being backlit by the relentless sun, losing much of its intricate detail, the moment was magical. If you look closely at the photo, you can see it looking directly at me, a brief but incredible connection captured forever.

Heading back to the car, content with capturing a few morning treasures, I reflected on one particularly special moment: a ladybug I managed to photograph up close with my 600mm lens. Despite the irritation of not having my macro lens for a better close-up, the experience itself was rewarding. The tiny, vibrant insect stood out against the lush backdrop, a reminder that it's not always about the perfect shot. It’s about the joy of being in nature, the thrill of discovery, and the mindful meditation that photography brings. Each encounter, no matter how small, adds to the richness of the journey.

On our way home, another red-tailed hawk caught my eye. This one, a youngling, looked slightly disheveled but no less magnificent. Safely pulling over to the side of the highway, I managed to get a few more shots, adding to the collection of morning treasures.

After dropping Baylee off at home, I decided to continue my day at the Butterfly Gardens, aiming to improve my butterfly photography. Unfortunately, technical difficulties with my camera’s focus, combined with the humidity and the crowd, left me with less than sharp images. Despite the disappointment, being surrounded by the fluttering of countless butterflies, each a masterpiece of color and design, was an awe-inspiring experience. Some even landed on me, a gentle reminder of nature's connection.

My day didn’t end there. I stopped at a roadside animal farm, enjoying a leisurely walk among goats, chickens, ducks, and a particularly curious donkey who loved pets. A llama and chickens, with their playful antics, rounded off the visit, making faces at me as if to say, "Enjoy the moment."

I spotted a duck leisurely getting a drink. Camera ready, I took a few shots, but it wasn’t until I reviewed the photos later that I noticed its cheeky expression. The duck had given me the perfect side-eye, as if to say, "Really? Can’t a duck have a moment's peace?" Its playful glare added a humorous touch to the serene scene, capturing the unique personalities of the wildlife I encounter. Moments like these remind me of the joy and unexpected connections that come with each outing.

I experienced an unforgettable moment. Holding a baby chick in my hands for a few precious minutes, I was overwhelmed with incredible feelings of joy and love. The chick's tiny heartbeat and soft feathers against my skin created a profound sense of connection. It trusted me completely, and that trust was an immense privilege. This one-on-one moment, where the chick seemed to understand I meant no harm, filled my heart with a unique and indescribable happiness. It reminded me why I love wildlife photography—not just for the images I capture, but for the deep, meaningful connections with nature that make every adventure worthwhile.

Though the day didn’t yield the photographic results I had hoped for, a friend’s reminder resonated deeply: it's about the experience and the journey, not just the results. Wildlife photography, for me, is more than just capturing images. It’s a form of mindful meditation, a way to quiet my mind, and a source of immense joy and peace. The connection I feel when photographing wild animals is indescribable, a reminder of why I do this.

Every outing, every shot, and every moment spent in nature is a gift, a chance to connect with the world around me and find tranquility in its beauty.
