Urban Wildlife Chronicles Challenge: Day 3 - July 24, 2024

At 0600 am, with a slight headache but undeterred spirit, Baylee and I embarked on another urban wildlife photography adventure. Today, our destination was Beacon Hill Park, a local gem in my city, renowned for its variety of wildlife and picturesque fauna. Armed with my trusty Sony A7R V and 600mm lens, I had high hopes of capturing some of the park's small bird species. However, despite the symphony of bird songs greeting us upon arrival, the little feathered creatures remained elusive. I could hear them but spotting them proved to be a challenge.

Not one to be easily discouraged, Baylee and I ventured further into the park. The morning light was soft and golden, casting a serene glow over the surroundings. I hoped to find some ducks, squirrels, and other critters to fill the frame.

To my surprise, the usually abundant ducks were scarce today. However, the resident grey and black squirrels were more than willing to model for me. Their playful antics and curious glances made for some delightful shots. There's something charming about their nimble movements and expressive faces.

Moving along, I stumbled upon a scene that never fails to amuse me – bobbing duck bums. These moments of ducks diving for food, their tails sticking up in the air, always bring a smile to my face. I managed to capture a few shots that perfectly encapsulate this endearing behavior.

And then, of course, there were the Canadian geese. While they aren't my favorite subjects, their majestic presence is undeniable. One particular photo stood out: a goose seemingly doing yoga, peeking out from between its companions (can you see her?). It was a serendipitous shot that added a touch of whimsy to the day's collection.

To wrap up our morning excursion, I turned my lens towards the park's vibrant flora. The array of flowers in full bloom provided a colorful and satisfying end to the trip. Despite the initial disappointment of not capturing any small birds, the variety of wildlife and the beautiful flowers made it a rewarding experience.

Practicing with my 600mm lens, I appreciated the distance it allowed me to maintain from the wildlife, ensuring they remained undisturbed. Each day of this challenge brings new lessons and opportunities, and today was no exception. I’m grateful for these moments of connection with nature, even within the city limits.
