As I wrap up my 7-day Urban Wildlife Photography Challenge, I can't help but feel a mix of relief and accomplishment. This journey was as rewarding as it was demanding, testing my patience, perseverance, and stamina every step of the way. Carrying a hefty 600mm lens, often with my loyal dog Baylee by my side, wasn't a task for the faint-hearted. The summer sun, whether during early 6:00 AM adventures or smoky evening excursions filled with bright light, added to the challenge. Yet, these very hurdles taught me that I have what it takes to capture the stunning wildlife often overlooked in our daily lives.
This challenge has deepened my appreciation for living in harmony with the animals around us. Each encounter with a bird, squirrel, or duck reminded me of the beauty and resilience of urban wildlife. It wasn't just about the photos; it was about connecting with nature on a profound level.
One of the most significant technical skills I picked up was shooting in shutter priority mode. This technique allowed me to freeze the fast-paced movements of my subjects, who rarely sat still for the camera. It was a game-changer, enabling me to capture the essence of these creatures in action. Most times though, they were still too fast for me but with time, my ability to capture them in flight will increase.
As I silently thanked the wildlife for their participation, I realized how much this challenge has contributed to my mental health and grieving process. Photography became my meditation, a way to quiet my mind and be fully present. I felt my mom, watching from heaven, celebrating each photo with me. This journey reminded me that through photography, I could find solace and a deep sense of peace.
Thank you, Urban Wildlife Challenge, for teaching me so much. This experience has transformed me into a full-fledged birder, ready to appreciate and document the vibrant life that thrives in our urban landscapes.
